Announcement from the Proton team on Reddit (Libreddit link):
Today, we’re increasing file storage limits on the free plan.
Instead of sharing 1 GB between files and email, you’ll now have:
5 GB for Proton Drive
1 GB for Proton Mail
Additional context: For Proton Drive, you now start with 2 GB and for Proton Mail, you start with 500 MB. After signing up for the Free plan, you can unlock the maximum storage allowance on each service thus:
You can boost your Proton Mail storage from 500 MB to 1 GB by completing four account setup actions.
You can boost your Proton Drive storage from the default 2 GB to 5 GB by completing three tasks.
- Discover how our privacy features protect you
- Set up automatic forwarding from Gmail
- Change an account login to your Proton Mail address
- Get the Proton Mail app on your iPhone or Android device
Within 15 days of making the account, to add. If you missed it or decided you’d rather not give them the password to your previous email account (the alt objective for the Gmail-specific thing) you don’t get a second chance.
I get that it’s free but I trust them much less because of the way they handle that.
Okay, but…why are they making people jump through hoops?
Marketing big brains I’m sure. They want to advertise all their great products and this is the best way to force users to learn about them
I wonder, is there a shorter, well understandabls way to write “up from” ?
I made a proto mail account recently and got the message about this.
But since i dont have a gmail account I cant do it. I think there was another one that was impractical also.
How do you prove the gmail thing? Without providing them your gmail info?
That’s extremely sus. Serious privacy respecting solutions don’t have that sort of policies. I’d assume it’s related to the Switzerland’s recent surveillance desires. Like they made some kind of a system that gathers some data when people do that tasks
What are you talking about? The tasks are things like, creating a folder in your Proton drive, creating a shareable link to a file, setting up a recovery method, etc.
Actually read the policies before spouting blind speculation.
And if your privacy needs actually require that level of paranoia, you shouldn’t be using a 3rd party email and cloud storage service anyways.
I looked at the provided source and found what the tasks were. But still it makes very little sense. The only not sus purpose that I can see is fighting bots that create accounts and steal space from the servers. But the previous amount of space is still available without the tasks… And one of the tasks is creating a recovery method… that’s basically connecting your account to another account… or even a phone number…
It’s marketing. Someone who signs up for the free email might not interested in drive. But then to get extra space in the emails they need to follow the tasks that make them interact with the other products, which will help gain people’s interest.
