      The years that followed were marked by increasing resistance against military rule, exemplified by pivotal moments such as the Gwangju Uprising in May 1980 [~2000 dead and 3,500 wounded]. This tragic event highlighted the extremes of martial law, as the government responded with violent repression against civilian protests. The brutality of the military’s response drew international condemnation and led to widespread activism against authoritarian rule.

      By the late 1980s, public discontent grew considerably, prompting a change in governance. In 1987, after immense pressure from civil society and pro-democracy movements, President Chun Doo-hwan announced the end of martial law,
