That makes alot of sense, but also makes me feel extra old. So do me a favor and GET OFF MY LAWN 🤣

I always imagine people who die on this hill just admiring the title screen of every game in their library for 5 seconds and calling it a gaming session lol.
For a point of comparison, a ChatGPT request uses 2.9 watt-hours (and rising) to a google searches 0.3 (which per your example would only be run once assuming you’re checking different blogs from the same list of results.)
I can’t speak to how often, but it definitely happens.
Its a perception thing, they see it as “I dont have to’learn’ anything I just follow these tutorials” even though a similar amount of effort would get them through the few commands they might need on Linux.
Eh, no use crying over spilt milk, youre here now. :) Linux is still stuck in a weird cultural hole, its not your fault it took a while.
Ive always been familiar but a daily driver of windows. I started self hosting a year or two ago, and recently switched my office PC to Linux with a secondary win partition. Ive just never had issues with windows but I’m pretty tired of what they’ve been up too lately so for me it was time. Whenever I get around to grabbing another m.2 for my living room rig I’ll do the same for it.
This is the thing that gets me about that level of user. I understand basic users who dont care prefering windows, but I always kind of found it amusing to watch people “Linux too hard booo CLI…now excuse me while I learn to manipulate the registry, and run scripts/disable certain things via the checks notes CLI.”
Believe it or not, straight to jail.

My car died over covid but my license plate was “I ALTF4” lol
Damn I didn’t know VLC was on android lol, definitely my desktop go-to!
I wonder how much money gets spent on all this vs how much it would cost to just not suck major ass. Neither approach is going to eliminate piracy, but at least trying to attract more flies with honey wouldn’t send more people to the black sails purely out of spite lol
Its like how in general (in the US) you dont have an expectation of privacy in public - You went to the mall, if someone is filming at the mall you might get caught in that.
You performed nude in this movie that was released to the public, you can’t then get mad that people are looking at you nude. Are we going to start monitoring streaming services for people who start a movie then click immediately to 00:49:32 a few times a week then go arrest them too?
Steal the album, buy a T-shirt at their concert!
Ironically most of these patented meds were developed with US funding, but somehow it isn’t socialism when corporations benefit.

I like how the entire defense is “If people actually saw our materials before signing up, our reputation and business would be destroyed”
You CAN take steps to limit your exposure in varying levels of effort, the problem is a lot of that means “not using the thing” (ie gmail, Facebook, etc) and most people are not about that life, gripe as they might.
I’ve paid for private email hosting for over 5 years, run grapheneOS on my phone, my fb is deactivated with messenger having limited perms on my phone and kept in an isolated container on desktop, self host a number of services like password management and storage - etc etc.
Am I safe from big tech? Not completely. There’s still 1000 ways your business gets out and about, and on desktop I still use YouTube logged in and all (no yt on phone though.) They’re still only getting a small fraction from me compared to other people though.
I don’t remember which game, but there was one that it came out that they straight up lost the files for and had to download from a ROM site to put on the virtual console thing
I pirate cause I can 🤷♂️ I spend a lot of money on media and gaming, sometimes I’m not $60 interested though lol.
You’re not wrong, but the underlying traits that make them that way is also what drives them to build FOSS software instead of maximizing their income potential at any and all costs. Meanwhile, most users just suuuuuuuck.
It shouldn’t fall on developers, but maybe the community should normalize finding a willing representative willing to listen to all the hot garbage the community throws at devs and have that person monitor various channels then relay only the relevant stuff to the Dev. Cause as it stands, difficult or not, FOSS devs are working for free and dont deserve the hate they get.
