Because modding online communities is a huge waste of time for anyone who isn’t desperate for validation.

I’ve been thinking about this lately.
You’re right in that there’s no central “authority”, but lemmy has become very centralised with all the content on a few big instances in fiefdoms controlled by a few mods who seem to be weirdos with too much time on their hands.
I guess the benefit is, if an instance or a mod does something really egregious there’s the potential to just move to another instance.
I think we need another few iterations of exodus from other platforms because of whatever shitstorm for lemmy to develop its own vibrance.
Yeah, I’ve never thought that far in to it.
I guess I just think it’s a way to “tease” someone without the target of the joke being them. Like, lets all laugh about what an idiot dad is, instead of lets all laugh about what an idiot this kid is.
When I was a kid uncles, siblings, and yeah parents, “teased” us by making mildly humiliating comments about which we would all laugh in a good natured hearty way. As in “fine_sandy_bottom is too short, we’ll have to put sheep poo in his boots to help him grow quicker”. Maybe it’s just teasing, maybe it’s a shitty thing to say to a child.
Playing “dad is an embarrassing idiot” doesn’t have that ambiguity.
My kids are just toddlers but I’m so pumped to embarrass them with dad-attempts-cool-talk.
Why they can’t just be “I didn’t enjoy that but it’s okay”, who knows.
Obviously, it’s because anyone who finds a rape joke funny is a bit creepy and rapey.
If being a boy involves rape jokes then yes, society in general has decided that being a boy is shitty.
Agreed. Apparently on 2024 shitposting is just an excuse to be repugnant.
Is this a rape joke?
In my experience syncthing is always a bit like that using the default discovery settings.
I use a hub & spoke set up now. Instead of A, B, and C all connecting to each other directly, they only connect to D. I also input the address for D specifically instead of using discovery servers.
With this set up I’ve never had any drama.
Perhaps. I think consumers are more willing to pay producers than they have been in the past. I acknowledge that the time is not yet right, but with time, the less appealing youtube is the more likely alternatives will become.
This is saddening.
I know the invidious contributors have been working on this over the last few months. Looks like they finally got there only to have youtube slam the door. That’s a real gut punch.
I already switched to running an instance at home instead of my VPS, so this news doesn’t change much for me personally but it’s a demonstration that youtube is actively seeking to block the project.
As with reddit / lemmy, I doubt a viable alternative will emerge until youtube has become well and truly offensive.
I really wish more youtube producers would cross post to other platforms.
That’s subjective.
My point is, I just don’t care.
I just don’t really feel the need to justify my piracy.
I watch pirate movies and tv and I don’t feel a teeny tiny bit of remorse, nor interest in whether it’s ethical.
There are very very few youtubers I world like to support.
I think you may have misunderstood.
If you’re a 22yo “influencer” and your target market is people who follow 22yo influencers then it will be difficult to generate engagement when you’re 27.
That doesn’t seem that controversial to me, and I don’t see how octogenarians getting laid at the supermarket is relevant?
Maybe a call centre operated by map producers, intended more for questions about routes and conditions rather than “take the third left” kind of navigation.
Hah.
Firstly, I wasn’t complaining.
Secondly, I suspect I’ve touched a nerve. Are you the fieflord of some Alexandrian repository of enlightened content and discord? Do you find it fulfilling?
