as far as VST plugins/audio software are concerned, it’s great over here, albeit with the usual WINE quirks once in a blue moon. the only thing stopping certain VSTs from working correctly (or in rare cases at all) is WINE. WINE ain’t perfect, but is it glorious.
RX10 and SpectraLayers Pro 11 run like a dream too.
the only thing i miss is having every vst work (i’ve learned ot live without the broken ones which are only a couple in my collection, besides that all of them work beautifully, aside from a few that have flickery UIs). FL Studio on Linux is awesome.

The left 4 dead 2 thing could have been fixed by running the game through Proton, as the native Linux port of thegame is less than stellar. Helldivers 2 is Helldivers 2, and honestly I wish LS just did a bit more research on PopOS to know that it switched to COSMIC (or just right out the bat didn’t make ChatGPT choose a distro for him by regurgitating those awful listicles with outdated info), and maybe, just maybe, reconsidered installing an OS at a LAN party. I’m sorry but if you’re installing an OS at a LAN party and let alone trying to troubleshoot things while people are waiting for you on a match, everyone will laugh at you.
However I will give LS the benefit of the doubt on Cosmic, that windows duplication bug was insane. idk how System76 decided Cosmic is ready for release now. They could have at least put it up as a second download option with a short disclaimer alongside the GNOME version or something.
Elijah and Luke did way better imho. They actually went onto the internet, chose the distro after a little bit of thread hunting and a little research, and tried their best to troubleshoot their problems.

So i’ve watched the 2nd episode, Linus is using an actual computer this time, which is a step up, but he had the bright idea to let ChatGPT recommend him a distro (PopOS again, which he didn’t do any further research on, especially consdiering now that they’re sipping an unfinished COSMIC DE in prod), and outstepping that with an even brighter idea: choosing to install the OS and deal with troubleshooting at a LAN Party, Yup, you heard that right, a LAN party. The perfect place to troubleshoot things while you have people who are waiting on you to start a match.
The problems he does encounter are indeed issues with the native linux port of L4D2 (audio levels changing and general source linux build bugs), also helldivers bugs in general, and it wouldn’t be current PopOS without a Steam window duplication bug.
The rest of the team are (like in the last one if i remember correctly), miles better, they actually allocated some time to troubleshooting and didn’t let ChatGPT recommend a distro for them, they actually used the internet.

jokes on them i’m already on linux (been since 2018). Failing that i’d honestly use veracrypt, just so that the key is with you and only you, but considering how invasive MS is with their copilot idk if i would really trust them not seeing anything.
wiped a windows partition with grub while trying to install an iso to a usb stick (just woke up and thought that was a good idea to be doing), realised my mistake, had bad ram at the time and so i bit the bullet and installed linux cause windows wouldn’t get past the initial install screen, 2 pcs later and i’m still rocking linux. switched in the tail end of october 2018 and i laugh at the state of windows ever since then.
i think Kdenlive has subtitle transcription which you can enable and configure in settings.
Here’s a tip: after moving the folder (idk if this counts after renaming a folder or file, probably doesn’t), go into your torrent client and click Force Recheck on the torrent. it’ll recheck everything and continue seeding the file.
yeah i had that happen to me too, didn’t look in the update screen because updates before went with a breeze but i took another look after VLC wouldn’t play anything, it was something with the VLC plugins and i needed to reinstall those, just had to do sudo pacamn -S vlc-plugins-all to get VLC to play video files back, but man, that should have been in the news imo.
I’m an ex-Windows user and have been using Linux for about 7-ish years now.
If you can handle some downtime, the possibility of some plugins breaking and some time getting used to your new system, you can give it a shot. Otherwise, what I’d more or less recommend is getting a spare computer and just trying Linux out on that. That way you can keep your work computer for critical work while you mess around on the spare.
I checked Cubase on WineHQ, and sadly it won’t run via WINE from what I see, so you will either have to look for a different DAW (which will require extra time re-learning everything) or just going with a spare).
If you do plan on biting the bullet and going full Linux on your work machine, here’s a couple observations:
The only Windows DAW i’ve tried on Linux is FL Studio running through WINE. I do have REAPER for aligning audio tracks (it’s very good at that) but I haven’t really used that enough to become proficient with it. There’s also Bitwig, which I haven’t used (I checked the price on that when i was kinda on the fence about getting it and oh boy is it expensive! around $800 with the annual upgrade or smth lol).
From my experience, VSTs via WINE (in my case, running through FL Studio 24.2.1), is quite good, although there are is a good bit of jank that comes with it (a few 32-bit VSTs don’t work, it’s a bit of a gamble honestly) and there are bound to be a couple potential breakages with WINE updates (like what happened today as I’m writing this, I updated WINE and idk if it’s just a residual thing but the GUIs on GVST plugins don’t render anymore, I can still access the parameters via hovering and looking at the hints panel in FL Studio, but it is a bit cumbersome trying to operate VSTs blindly, especially when they contain things such as waveforms/levels).
Other than that FL Studio’s been running like a charm, very very close to (if not native), except for stuff like the Diagnostic thingy not working at all (told you there’s jank).
As for replacements, you will need to learn new programs, one which may not contain all the features that you would want (muscle memory can also be a bit of a pain). I’d start out with maybe trying out Audacity and GiMP/Krita on Windows and try learning and getting used to the workflow of each on your existing Windows installation before swapping over. I was using FOSS programs like GiMP/Audacity beforehand so the transition was easy once I swapped over. FL in WINE back then was a little more finnicky but most of it still worked so it kept me going.
If you’re still thinking about wiping Windows off of there and going full Linux, good luck, my friend.

It’s pretty good, ngl, although i’d much rather than fade out, overlay the alternative clips by a few frames, then fade out and in usinc either cubic out/cubic in, or a combination of exponential and cubic. Gives it a more seamless transition imo.
it’s high quality (afaik) if oyu get from Tidal or Deezer (if Deezer works at all, worked before but it’s now haing some issues as of late), Lucidia also is a bit unstable as of late but when it works it’s a nice little site

idk if i would inherently say that, but the CEO does have some worms in his brain so there’s that.
if they put in DRM that makes the plugins 10x as big (looking at you, Acustica. I don’t even use their plugins because of that), or they make the legit version have some bullshit always-online “all-in-one” software (i.e Native Access) which in turn makes the software a bit of a faff to get working in Linux (to install legit libraries for legit kontakt, native access stores those libraries as .iso files and does some virtual drive fuckery a la DAMEONTools), then yes, if the pirated version is quicker to set up and run (and install libraries for), it is justified imo.
Also i hate theaters and streaming services. I’d rather watch whatever movie I think is cool in the comfort of my PC rather than having to drive to the theater (if it’s even on there in the first place), or paying for 9000 streaming services now and only watch like a couple of things. The wait for a good webrip (even more so for a BluRay) is worth it.
i kinda wish that some people who post security vulns stop being so vague and cherry-picky sometimes, like you could have written in your post that it only affects windows and it affects only a certain range of versions of the program. would have clearned things up better imo. interesting to know, though.
