also, check out some of the firefox forks. I personally really like Floorp since it lets me put the tab bar at the bottom and customise the UI! Librewolf is also decent but some of its privacy anti-fingerprinting stuff makes it a bit annoying to use
Hi, I’m sbird! I like to make all sorts of things!
also, check out some of the firefox forks. I personally really like Floorp since it lets me put the tab bar at the bottom and customise the UI! Librewolf is also decent but some of its privacy anti-fingerprinting stuff makes it a bit annoying to use
onlyoffice is also a pretty good option for ms office compatibility
i think he wants a rec for a linux distro
gmail -> proton or tuta if you don’t care about IMAP, or any other decent email provider (I use disroot, I set my brother up with mailfence, they both seem quite good. I use them with thunderbird) pycharm -> not an IDE, but I like VSCodium (vscode without MS)
fluent reader is good!
yk, fair enough. if you like it, that’s fine by me
yep, the app is SLOW
I’ve tried tuta before. It seems pretty okay, but it doesn’t support IMAP meaning you have to use their app, and (at least for me) it was SLOW.
I personally use disroot, but there’s loads of other options, like mailfence seems like a decent alternative. Just pick one that supports IMAP
good to be here! honestly the third-party app thing swayed me, there’s so many good apps (ice cubes, mastoot, mlem, impressia, etc.)
oh and also I should definitely include links to awesome-selfhosted and other similar github repos, that would definitely be good too.
that seems pretty cool. I should probably add links to similar github repos as well (e.g. awesome-selfhosted, awesome-[whatever], etc.)
I use floorp (firefox fork) because I like having the tabs at the bottom. Makes them closer to the taskbar and a bit easier to navigate.
Thanks for the criticism! yeah, there is definitely heavy bias in this. I’ll try to add some description to why I chose what I chose. I think I did that well when it comes to the “devices” section (I have written the specs of some of the laptops and compared them based on that) but yeah you’re right I definitely need to improve on that.
Screenshots of the programs are a good idea too. A lot of the desktop and phone apps were mostly based on my experiences with them and I agree that it’s definitely quite biased. Maybe I could extend bestof into being a review site as well, that would be kind of cool and interesting.
oh, and also, bestof isn’t yet another suggestion repo, my idea is that it covers a whole lot of different topics from clothing to smart home tech to 3d printers. I’ve got the breadth of content, but need more depth, as you said! Again, thank you for your time to respond, really appreciate it!
oh yep, oops, I’ll go fix that
yes, but LibreOffice makes more sense for Linux in my opinion. for some weird reason LibreOffice’s UI in Windows looks horrible, so for Windows I prefer OnlyOffice. On Linux, LibreOffice’s UI is fine, so I prefer that over OnlyOffice for Linux.
probably. I’ve searched around and there seems to be a few plugins for connecting OVOS with HA. no idea if those let you control devices though. Hopefully OVOS (and others like it) eventually develop into a worthy alternative to Alexa/Google/Siri!
it’s an obsidian vault I’ve been working for quite a while now turned into a website with github pages + a jeykyll theme. I think that this could be really helpful to people trying to decide what thing to buy out of all the bazillion different almost identical things out there
oh this counts as self promotion, should I delete the post then? really sorry about this
yep, I fixed the typo! I’ve always thought it was spelt Mastadon. weird. I never used Facebook/Instagram/Snapchat/whatever even before I knew about the fediverse. I basically only use Mastodon to keep up to date with tech news through following accounts like android authority. Pixelfed I use just to share photos I’ve captured. Lemmy I use as what it is: a reddit alternative. Never used frendica before, but probably won’t try it since I personally have no use for it.
oh that’s sad. I mostly switched out of proton bc I didn’t want to put all my eggs in one basket. Also, not having IMAP sucksss because both the official proton and tuta apps are SLOW
