  • Hahahaha, this is almost what happened to my daughter 2 years ago.

Neighbor is Vi, wife is Filipina. I don’t know why the viet neighbor family don’t celebrate Halloween, they are catholics (don’t know how many viet are) and their youngest kid is a teenager. But that is their business, so I don’t put my nose down that rabbit hole. Daughter then 3, rings their door bell for trick or treat. She insisted, in ringing their doorbell, it’s the only house she insisted rining, why? Because we told her trick or treating is going out to scare the neighbors. And the word neighbor is mostly used to our next door Viet neighbors, because our doors are so close.

Anyway, daughter ring the door bell. They don’t have anything ready, the mother goes and gets a pack of instant noodles for my daughter. This made my daughter so happy, all the candy she got was secondary to this pack of instant noodles. The memory of these noodles outlived the memory of any candy she got both two years ago and last year. She rang the door bell again this year but they didn’t open, she now 5, was mildly sad that she didn’t get another pack of noodles.

  • I don’t get this point of view, maybe I should because it sounds logical. But again sometimes I want to listen to harpsichords in E by Bach. And sometimes I want to listen to hallowed be thy name from iron maiden, sometimes I want to listen to a nightmare to remember by dream theater, and sometimes I want to listen to wrong side of heaven by ffdp.

It’s like the same logic that I love eatimg healthy home made delicious filipino food every day of the week, by my excellent cook of a wife. And yet occasionally I get a craving for a menu at burger King with a monster energy drink.

It is as if there is redeemable factors in both

Jokes on you, because just that you learned to read analogue clocks, makes your brain more plastic. I am sure you know what that word means, but for anyone else, plastic means adaptable. The more things you learn the easier it is to learn more things.

  • I used to use i3 as my main desktop, now I run sway. But I haven’t installed i3 or sway on the steam deck. Mainly because I have spent years perfecting my i3wm config, used days converting it over to sway, then used months tweaking it. And I just don’t want to do that again on my steam deck.

But here is what I would try if I didn’t have two kids and lots of responsibilities.

I’d try installing sway, or i3wm if I couldn’t get that going in an arch Linux distrobox. Arch Linux just because I am familiar with it, and it’s very maluable. Pick which you are most familiar with if you want. And then I would launch that as a non steam app.

Then what I am dredding the most comes next. Configuring the window manager. I’d take my current sway config, or my current i3wm config and just rip out what is not needed. And plan and craft keybinds together with a steam input configuration… I think it would be possible to make a very comfortable and usable configuration.

the main thing I think valve should do to make desktop more usable is to detect when a keyboard input is in focus and show the on screen keyboard automatically. And also show move it to the top if it means you would see the text input field. Or maybe use some gamescope magic to move the viewport you are looking at the desktop so that you always can see the text input. Or some apps like terminal emulators would have to be resized.

It won’t be perfect, at least without improvements to gamescope. But it can be quite interesting
