22·2 years agoI like “bing” just fine, in the sense that I’m pretty sure duckduckgo uses Bing search results

Linux@lemmy.ml•Should i switch from systemd to another init system, What are the advantages of using another init system?English
1·2 years agoYeah but I’ve interacted with it a lot and most of my interaction is commands sent through one of their programs. Versus scripts like init.d whose contents I can easily inspect and modify. Init scripts aren’t config files, they’re directly executable code.
All contracts are negotiable, you did nothing wrong other than not having a conversation before wasting paper, the main issue is that for most people the negotiation is “if you want to work here you have to agree to all this.”
But yeah reasonable accommodation and mutual understandings, etc, should be written down and signed. I challenged the non-disclosure agreement at my job once because it literally said I couldn’t talk about my work with ANYONE, and a plain reading of it would mean I’d be unable to even talk to my boss about what I was supposed to be doing. It was poorly written and probably unenforceable. My boss didn’t like that so I signed it anyway and then focused on finding work elsewhere (he was a dick and his company got raided by the FBI a few years later)

Linux@lemmy.ml•Should i switch from systemd to another init system, What are the advantages of using another init system?English
273·2 years agoIt used to be that everything in Linux was a file, ideally a text file, so if you could find the right file you could access or change what you wanted. Systemd is a big program that manages a bunch of stuff and creates unique commands within its programs for doing so, which moves away from that principle and turns system management into what feels a bit more microsofty (like the registry editor program vs editing config files, etc) and a lot of people don’t like that. But to its credit, it does solve a few problems with cobbling together a modern system that doesn’t suck.
Not always, but the ones I’m friends with yeah.
I’ve only been lectured on the Pledge, etc, by family members of veterans. All the veterans I know are fully aware that the United States is a pyramid scheme and its wars are blood money for oil.
Idk about Endeavour but I use Duplicity and don’t currently regret it.
They also let you just fill in whatever for height and weight, I’m surprised they even care about gender and age

31·2 years agoHuh now I know. Never heard of it before. I use OpenShot which is FOSS but it’s meh.
How does that feel both shorter and longer than it actually was?

11·2 years agoIt’s been a few decades since I got into it, but can you tell me the best Linux alternatives to Adobe Premiere / After Effects, Final Cut Pro, and AVID? I’ve tried a few and they tend to have problems with crashing and overall limited functionality.

31·2 years agoI’m a Linux developer who’s made Electron apps, I have complete and total understanding of everything you’re saying. You don’t seem to be understanding the thing we’re saying, which is that if you really really need a specific Microsoft or Adobe product, your best option is still Windows or Mac since Wine isn’t very good. This is a fault of those corporations, not technology.

61·2 years agoBe aware that OnlyOffice is developed by Russians and headquartered in Latvia, it may be perfectly fine but it’s worth being aware of. At least one company claims to have severed ties as a result, and supposedly you have to pay for full features? LibreOffice is completely FOSS. https://dms-solutions.co/blog/dms-solutions-stops-doing-business-with-onlyoffice-due-to-onlyoffice-close-ties-with-russia/

41·2 years agoThat’s exactly what he said, and then he also said except for industry-specific software like video editing, graphic design, etc, where big companies don’t offer a Linux version and the alternatives aren’t quite up to par. It’s true there’s Offcie 365 online but it’s still subpar compared to the real deal, like if you’re a PowerPoint or Excel power user or really need Access or another specialized program.
I’m all for Linux, these big companies have just eaten a lot of the market and refuse to play nice.
Also see if you have ADD/ADHD

Being laughed at for how your body is is one thing, being laughed at for buying a fascist’s ChildishCompensationMobile is another. It’s a choice to buy Jeff Bezos’ $100,000 Dick Mobile and drive it around like you’re cool, it’s another to… try and exist? As best you can? Corporeally?
Like no I don’t need to worry about the feelings of anyone who gives Trump money and allegiance. They made bad choices that materially affect me (how many Twitters can these guys buy up and turn into a KKK Safe Place with this money?) and I can tell them they suck for it. Completely not the same as giving redheads swirlies.
Like, for context I also give distainful looks at poor drivers in BMWs and Benzes: obviously money didn’t give them sense. So yes I’ll laugh at anyone giving Musk money after knowing his true colors.
