Using sync for Android.

And I get that Sync doesn’t control ads. But I wonder if there’s settings to adjust? Because this is super creepy.

Some day I will try Sync, to see why people accept totaly unnecessary ads when there are plenty of free (beer, freedom, etc) adfree options out there. It must be one hell of a software.

It’s a decent client, but I think Boost is a better non-FOSS alternative.

I have both, and have never seen an ad. So whatever ad delivery mechanisms they use is blocked by simple DNS based ad blocking.

I still prefer the FOSS client Voyager.

Boost + $3.49 to go ad free, here.

Since buying Reddit is Fun years ago, this is the closest thing to that experience I’ve came across.

I’m using sync and see ads despite having recently setup pihole with its default blocking list. If you’re also using pihole, mind sharing which block lists you use?

Is your phone using your pi-hole for DNS? Or is it using Android/WiFi configured to use custom DNS e.g. 9.9.9.9, 1.1.1.1, etc.?

DuckDuckGo’s Android app’s VPN based ad blocker works to block it’s ads, at least for me. I don’t have a link to their host file though.

Check your Pi-Hole logs to see if your phone shows up, and if so, open Sync and see what pops up in your logs.

I’ve tried lots of others, both during the Reddit days and now during the Lemmy days. None of them let me get the exact layout I want other than sync. But that’s just like my opinion

There is an IAP to remove ads. Yes, there are free alternatives, but Sync is superior in terms of design, customization options and features. Well worth it if you have the disposable income IMO.

It’s just … Does seeing the same information in a slightly different arrangement really mean that much to you? Especially when that information is probably 80% memes

It’s the layout. It’s the cards. It’s the collapsable comments, color coded, easy access of other users, instances, and content, one hand hide content, save, block etc. It’s just a very well made app. It’s like early day browser reddit vs what i use now. Yes the content is the same. It’s how you interact with it.

Especially relevant considering you can run your own, reputable software on any half-decent PC to generate AI images (not that you should use such a software for this purpose) without ever visiting a sketchy advertiser.

The irony of this bot is that pipelinks actually prevent me from using Libre tube because it’s not possible for it to register for every instance out there on Android. YouTube links actually let me use piped more easily

The thing is, in my apps, I’ve turned off all sensitive categories in AdMob/Sense, and some risque ones still show up every now and then.

Whenever users report these to me, I first prove to them that I have indeed disabled such ads (screenshots of the dashboard), and then I straight up tell them to use ad blockers if it bothers them too much. Or at least use the report button in the ad itself.

Google’s detection is pretty good but not infallible.

Tap on the x provide the feedback to the advertiser and ((hopefully)) you’ll get less ads tailored to your demographic.

I believe if you hit the X you can hide the ad and give a reason. The other icon takes you to an article that tells you how to change some settings, but it’s a web of options.

This setting might be related, as it should allow you to toggle personalised ads in sites that partner with Google. The article at least mentions this.

You can find a support article on how to report ads as well in case you see any real sketchy stuff, but I was only able to report a handful of ads that were later confirmed to not be violating any rules. Even though those were crypto ponzi scheme ads presented by Phony Stark. Google doesn’t care, they just want the ad revenue.

In fact it is not necessary to come into this community to see this discussion. Choosing All and Top six hours is enough to see this discussion as the fifth result on the first page. You can´t really blame people for joining in and stating their opinion, which is not trolling. Also, Dipshit is correct, lemmy does not have ads unless you use a client that has. Like it or not, Dipshit is right.

When something comes up in my feed and I have comments to add, I add them. I didn’t seek this community out, nor am I badmouthing them. Devs gotta get paid, and if they want to add ads, so be it - users may not like it but the devs are free to do so.

though, if ads are desired, maybe don’t just allow self-serve ads without any kind of review. or programmatic ads, or image ads, well, i mean, this is what we open ourselves up to when we include ads, right?
