I bought this car several years before Musk took over Twitter. It is overall an excellent car and this sort of thing is absolutely not exclusive to Tesla.
Although I am considering trading it in for an old Honda Accord or something that doesn’t require any apps or data.
The shoddy construction and economy-class interior quality was well known even in Muskys prime. That being said, there were basically no options for even medium range EVs at that time other than Tesla.
Maybe you can find some magat to offload it onto and get a better modern EV hahah

The app is your key to the car. Unless you just use the card as your key but you lose functionality to preheat your car and stuff.

Phone as a key is nice, but absolutely not necessary on the cars that do have it since they give you proper key fobs instead of cheap hotel keycards.
Yes, I can accept that an app can offer additional utility that a keyfob can’t. That’s fine as long as it isn’t needed for basic functionality.
My bicycle has an app, too. But I don’t need it to ride.On a Tesla, you can use the wallet card, phone app, or a key fob. The wallet card comes with the car, but if you want a key fob you have to buy it separately. The app is free and does not require a subscription.
GM’s OnStar + app on the other hand…yikes.

And see, if there was such a thing as an aftermarket device that allowed me to use my phone as the car key, I’d install one in a heartbeat. Seems like the perfect solution to me. I carry my phone with me at all times anyway, why do I need a separate key? As long as it just uses the NFC chip to unlock the doors, it should allow my phone to emulate the fob and no app should be necessary unless you just want to do something fancy like remote start the car or pop the trunk from across the parking lot. Just give me something simple that allows me to change out my useless fob for my phone and I’d gladly pay upwards of $1000 for that convenience.
Would this system rely on your phone being on? Because, if a flat phone battery will leave you stranded, or if you break it, that’s just asking for trouble.
Not having to carry a key around is a huge bonus.

More cars are using going to adopt it. It’s just like having a fob which is “keyless”. The fob is your phone which has the app.
It’s not like having a keyless fob. The keyless fob isn’t connected to the internet and gps, doesn’t require creating an account, doesn’t require Google services, doesn’t need software updates, doesn’t send notifications, doesn’t need to be charged daily, doesn’t break when it falls out of my hand, etc.
Oh, and it doesn’t show me ads.
I’m a strong opponent of the current forced-digital trend. Networked software has many, many disadvantages compared to dedicated hard-coded and unconnected devices like key fobs.
Not everything should be an app.I have a keyless fob. It’s great. It’s also got an actual key in it in case the battery dies. Which it has before while I was out. It’s also a 2013 so this isn’t new tech.
Using a phone app as the main or sole method of unlocking (I saw the card bit, that’s good) is insane. If your phone dies, if you lock yourself out of your phone, drop it in a puddle, if you get locked out of the app, if the app messed up, etc. All ways to keep you out of your car. Which in many cases is a safety and health risk.

Right. I can just imagine being somewhere at 2 am trying to find a way to charge my phone so I can open my car, while also i can’t even call an Uber or something because my phone is dead.
So it is not critical, but a very nice to have.
I have a 2021 Seat Leon, I can sign up for a subscription and use an app to check the status of my car, turn on the heater and stuff like that, but it is just a nice to have for me, normal keys work fine, and I have never used the app.
So if you are looking for a car with no requirenments for an app, VW cars are good on that front.
It’s also how you schedule service and stuff. I love my Tesla. Hate musk. But I’d also say that isn’t an ad imo cause it’s just saying you can have free charging which is nice to know and the other is just dumb for referrals. I’ve never seen that in my app so who knows.

Scheduling service through the app is an absolute nightmare and the people at Tesla don’t know hot to use it.
Not at all, you’d just lose all your remote functionality and you’d have to carry the NFC card to unlock it. Or you can buy a traditional key fob.
hondas tend to last a very long time, so you will be able to wait out this data collection hellscape (at least on the car front).

This kind of shit is why modern cars will fail. Not because of build quality, but because corporate moneygrubbers will never, EVER be able to keep their fingers out of the free money software pie. It’s against their very nature.
I absolutely refuse to buy any car that has these integrated, baked-in infotainment systems that they can fuck with remotely. I’ll hold onto my 91 Accord till it dies, engine swap it, then electric swap it as many times as I have to.

I’m sure you will but the average consumer will not. If you look into the electric power train swaps they can easily run into 6 figures. And at the end you’re still driving a 30+ year old Honda Accord without modern safety features.

For now. The swap industry is still new and every drivetrain has to be built from bespoke parts and a lot of labor- when electric becomes mandatory and not a luxury, there will be a blossoming industry of ready-made battery and motor/transmission kits meant to adapt commonly built cars over to electric. When it goes from weeks of wiring and fabricating to a day or two of unbolting parts, those swap costs will drop to economically feasible levels. And since we’ll likely never see an economic electric car under $40k in our lifetime… there’s a lot of value to have there.
And “successful” in every other industry is a bit of a stretch. Tolerated, sure, and the modern consumer is braindead enough to think it’s OK. It is my personal preference that any modern car with this stuff baked into it is a failure and I will never touch one with a ten foot pole, they can go fuck themselves with that rent seeking.

People who rent? I see several places near me with a cable coming out of an outdoor socket or a home into the parking lot (actually hidden a bit so it doesn’t impact the sidewalk). Overnight should be enough if you aren’t planning a roadtrip the next day.

I’m very happy to have a level 2 though. I top off (to 80%) my car about once a week or when I want to schedule it to be defrosted

It takes something like 20 hours to charge from empty, but for topping off day to day it’s not the bad really.
It’s totally fine. I work from home so I can get ~100 miles of range/day. And I only drive that far in 1 day maybe 1x/month.
